Guilin & Yangshuo 2026: Boat or Raft, 3 Days

Summary: Guilin is not about adding sights; it turns on one either-or choice, the boat or the raft. Once that is settled the three days fall into place: the city first, the whole of day two on the river, day three left to Yangshuo. This guide sets out the differences between the two water routes, the station and pier connections, and the booking windows.
The river decides the trip
Guilin differs from other cities here in one respect: the landscape is not in the city. Elephant Trunk Hill and the city lakes are the opening act; the Li River karst corridor lies sixty kilometers east, with Yangshuo beyond. Settle one problem first – the boat or the raft – and the rest follows.

Five numbers that shape a Guilin trip
| Days needed | Three days: half in the city, one on the river, one in Yangshuo |
| Book before you fly | Li River cruise or raft, the lake night cruise, and a real-name booking for Elephant Hill |
| River cruise ticket | Three-star ¥215 (about US$32) from Mopanshan Pier incl. the ¥54 (about US$8.1) scenic ticket; four-star ¥360 (about US$54) from Zhujiang Pier |
| Guilin North to Yangshuo | About 25 minutes by rail; Yangshuo station sits near Xingping, 33 km from West Street |
| Elephant Trunk Hill | Free, but real-name booking required; ages 60 and over may skip the booking on ID |
1. Why Guilin, and who should skip it
Guilin’s isolated karst peaks are only samples. The Li River strings a hundred kilometers of them into one line, and the Guilin–Yangshuo stretch is the landscape printed on the back of the 20-yuan note. The city itself deserves very little of your time: Elephant Trunk Hill is thirty minutes to an hour, the lakes take one evening, and the rest belongs to the river.
Come if you want limestone pinnacles and river water in one frame, and if an early start does not put you off. Reorder the trip if museums, shopping and modern buildings are the point for you, or if a 07:00 start is not negotiable.

No-repeat rule: payments, connectivity, hotel types, general scams, rail ticketing, best season and dish pricing are referenced, not rewritten here.
2. What you must book before you go
Guilin has few things you must book ahead, but each is time-locked: leave it late and it is gone. Sources are listed at the end; prices are rechecked in the week of publication. Both water routes are on that list, and the choice between them is set out in section 6.
Elephant Trunk Hill · free, but reserved
- Real-name entry: the Elephant Hill scenic area runs a real-name booking system through its official WeChat account, mini-program or authorized platforms; without a booking you are turned away.[1]
- Exempt groups and hours: visitors aged 60 and over, serving and retired military, fire and rescue staff and people with disabilities enter without booking on valid ID. Open 07:00–21:30, last entry 21:00; Gate 3 opens later and is the main way in. Fubo Hill and Diecai Hill in the same area still charge admission.[2]
The Li River cruise · the main event
- Official channels: the Li River ticketing office’s WeChat service account and its Guilin Li River mall mini-program. The scenic area sells through real-name reservation only.
- Release window: star-rated cruise tickets go on sale 10–15 days ahead and are taken fast in peak season. Register and load passengers’ details fifteen days out.[3]
- Fares and children: three-star ¥215 from Mopanshan Pier to Yangshuo, incl. the ¥54 scenic ticket and ¥161 (about US$24) boat fare, half fare ¥108 (about US$16); four-star ¥360 from Zhujiang Pier with buffet.[11] Children aged six and under, or under 1.2 m, travel free, two per adult; six to fourteen pay half.[4]
- One way, morning only, no stops: four to five hours from the Guilin piers to Yangshuo. It is also your transfer, not a return trip.[5]
The bamboo raft · highlight section, seven days ahead
- Booking and pricing: rafts are booked seven days ahead through the same official channel. A raft seats four and is priced per raft, so a smaller group tops up the empty seats.
Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise · one evening
- Official channels and hours: the Two Rivers and Four Lakes official WeChat account, or the operator’s own site at glljsh.com; night cruises run 19:00–21:30.[9]
- Route and fares: the waterways link the Li River and the Peach Blossom River with four lakes – Shan, Rong, Gui and Mulong – on a loop of about ninety minutes.[10] Prices differ by boat and route; take the official figure on the day.

3. The three days that work
The three days obey one rule: the river day does not move. The water delivers you to Yangshuo rather than back to Guilin, so day two always ends in Yangshuo. That fixes the city on day one and Yangshuo on day three.
Day 1 · Guilin city
Arrive Guilin → Elephant Trunk Hill (Gate 3, with a booking) → dinner around Dongxi Alley and the Zhengyang pedestrian street → the Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise after 19:00 → sleep in the city, near Binjiang Road or Central Square.
Day 2 · The Li River (a full day)
Leave the city 07:00–08:00, forty-five minutes to Mopanshan or Zhujiang pier → four to five hours downstream → disembark at Longtoushan Pier.[6] Raft version: reach Yangdi or Xingping, run the highlight section in one to two hours, then continue to Yangshuo by rail or coach.
Day 3 · Yangshuo by bike
A quiet stretch along the Yulong River early → the Ten-Mile Gallery road → beer fish for lunch → leave in the afternoon, or stay for the sunset at Xingping.
Three places that need their own half-day
The Longji rice terraces (two hours out, realistically a full day), Xingping old town with the Laozhai sunset, and the Yulong River rafts. Crammed into three days they become a relay. If the spare half-day lands in the city instead, Fubo Hill and Diecai Hill stand beside Elephant Trunk Hill and still charge admission, the Sun and Moon Pagodas are best from the lakeside after dinner, and Dongxi Alley is a twenty-minute walk that is worth doing before 09:00 (section 8).

4. Where to stay
Accommodation comes down to one decision: night one in the city, every night after in Yangshuo. Which district you pick inside those two towns is about convenience versus quiet.
- Guilin city center · Central Square and Binjiang Road. The best spot for night one: Elephant Trunk Hill is walkable, the night-cruise pier is next door, and the day-two pickup starts here.
- Yangshuo West Street and around. The default from night two: dinner, bike rental and day tours at your door. The trade is noise at night, worst in street-facing rooms.
- The edge of Yangshuo town · Shima and Kangzhan Road. Quieter and cheaper, ten to twenty minutes’ walk from West Street, good if you will cycle.
- Xingping. For sunrise, sunset and the 20-yuan view, this suits a final night: fewer people, the river close by.
One sequencing rule: night one in Guilin city, everything after in Yangshuo. With only one night in Guilin, do not spend it beside Guilin North station.

5. Getting around
Guilin has no metro, so getting around town means buses, taxis and ride-hailing. Learn three stations and two piers before you arrive.
- Guilin North. The main high-speed station, 7 km north of the center; a taxi into town is roughly ¥25 (about US$3.7), and bus 100 runs too. Most Yangshuo trains leave from here.
- Guilin station. In the center, for conventional trains and some high-speed services, closer to Binjiang Road and Elephant Trunk Hill.
- Yangshuo station. Not in Yangshuo town. It sits near Xingping, 33 km from West Street. Change outside onto the shuttle coach (about an hour, around ¥20 (about US$3)) or take a taxi; a separate shuttle reaches Xingping old town in fifteen to twenty minutes.
- Mopanshan and Zhujiang piers. Where the cruise starts, about 28 km southeast of the city, forty to fifty minutes by road. Arrange the transfer when you book.
- Guilin North to Yangshuo. About 25 minutes by train, second class around ¥25–35 (about US$3.7–5.2) – the fastest way there. Check 12306 for tickets.[12]
- Inside Yangshuo. An electric bike rents for about ¥30–60 (about US$4.5–9) a day, a bicycle for ¥10–20 (about US$1.5–3), varying with battery range; rental shops cluster around West Street.
Two arrival points, neither of them West Street. The rail handoff ends at Yangshuo station, out near Xingping, and the river handoff ends at Longtoushan Pier, on the Yangshuo side: the town you have booked a room in is a further leg from both. The station runs two shuttles, one into Yangshuo town and one to Xingping old town, and they are not the same bus, so take the one that matches where you are sleeping. At the pier, the transfer into town is a separate arrangement. Neither handoff is worth improvising on the morning: settle both when you book, and confirm the times then rather than at the rank.

6. The boat or the raft: Guilin’s only real decision
This is the core of the guide. The boat and the raft are not about paying more or less. They are two different trips: one moves you from A to B, the other puts you close to the water. Choose badly and the most important day of the three feels off.
The cruise: a day given to the river
Board at Mopanshan or Zhujiang pier and drift downstream to Yangshuo for four to five hours without stopping. There is a cabin, an upper deck and toilets; four-star boats include a buffet, three-star boats do not. Departures are morning-only and one way. It suits families with older relatives or small children, people with luggage, and first-timers who want the move to Yangshuo handled at once. The cost: crowds, a fixed schedule, and no stopping for photographs.
The raft: close to the water, weather permitting
Rafts run the highlight section between Yangdi and Xingping. A raft is licensed for four and priced per raft, sits close to the water, can stop for photographs, and takes one to two hours. The limits are tighter: rafts are suspended when the water level is out of range or visibility is poor, night running is prohibited, a life jacket must be worn properly, and everyone on the water must show a physical ID. It suits younger travelers, photographers, and anyone who only wants the highlight.
How to choose, in three questions
- Heavy luggage, older relatives, first visit → the cruise. It doubles as your transfer to Yangshuo.
- Two days, close-up photographs, flexible schedule → the raft. Reach Yangshuo by rail or coach and keep river time to two hours.
- Plenty of time → they do not conflict. The raft is for looking, the cruise for getting from A to B, and they run the same way.
What the raft rules mean in practice. The number on the invoice is for the raft and not per head, so a party of two either shares with strangers or pays for the empty seats; every quote deserves one question about whether it is per person or per raft. Everyone on the water needs the original ID document, foreign visitors the passport itself, because a phone photograph is not accepted. The life jacket has to be properly fastened rather than carried, and rafting after dark is prohibited.
How weather changes the plan: in low-water months the cruise route can be shortened; after heavy summer rain the river turns murky and reflections vanish; on storm days the rafts stop. Both follow the official notice on the day.

7. What to eat, and which meal
This section answers one question: which dish at which meal. Cuisines and price ranges are covered in our food post and are not repeated.
- Guilin rice noodles · breakfast, at a neighborhood shop. Mix it dry first, then add broth; the standard bowl comes with braised meat. Noodles near scenic areas usually cost about twice a neighborhood shop.
- Yangshuo beer fish · the town’s signature dinner. Priced by the weight of a live fish, and West Street is the priciest stretch; two streets inland the same fish costs noticeably less.
- Stuffed river snails and Lipu taro braised pork · local dishes. Right for two or three with rice, and better value than building the meal around one fish.
- Gongcheng oil tea and pickled fruit · snacks. Do not build a meal around them; try them from a stall when you pass one.

8. Two hours off the tourist track
Guilin and Yangshuo are different places before 07:00 and after 17:00. These four spots need no ticket, and the crowds thin as soon as you step in.
- Xingping old town and Laozhai hill · late afternoon. The summit gives the sunset over the big river bend – the exact angle on the back of the ¥20 note. The climb is steep; wear shoes with grip.
- The lanes along the Yulong River · before 07:00. Skip the main Ten-Mile Gallery road and walk by the water: buffalo, rafts and mist.
- Around Rong Lake and Shan Lake in Guilin · early or after dinner. A free lakeside walk where the Sun and Moon Pagodas light up in full view, no boat needed.
- Dongxi Alley · before 09:00. An order of magnitude quieter than in the evening, and a good stretch of old wall.

9. Rules that catch visitors out
- Carry the physical ID onto the water. Rafts and river trips accept only the original identity card; foreign visitors bring the passport itself. A phone photo does not count.
- The life jacket is compulsory, not advised. The Li River navigation rules require everyone on a raft to wear one properly.[7]
- Weather can override the plan. Rafts are suspended when the water level is out of range or visibility is poor; in low-water months the cruise route may be shortened.[8]
- The same-day return to Guilin is by road. The river carries you into Yangshuo and stops there.
- Rafts are priced per raft. A raft is licensed for four and a smaller group tops up the empty seats. Ask whether the quote is per person or per raft.
- Elephant Trunk Hill is free but reserved. No booking, no entry; ages 60 and over may enter on valid ID.
- The piers are outside the city. Mopanshan and Zhujiang are about 28 km out, forty to fifty minutes by road.
10. FAQ
Can I do both in one day?
Usually not, and not in one clean line. Both routes finish in Yangshuo, so you cannot cruise downstream and still fit the raft highlight into the same day. Want more hours on the water? Take the cruise. Want the camera near the surface? Take the raft.
What happens to the plan if the rafts are suspended?
The river day is the one part of the three that the weather can overrule. A suspension is declared on the water level or the visibility, and the operator’s notice that morning is the authority. The day itself does not have to go with it: the cruise is the other way onto the same water, and because the river day sits in the middle of the three, there is a day on either side to trade with. If the whole river is closed, Longji and Yangshuo can take the gap and the water moves to the next morning.
Can I do this without speaking Chinese?
Getting around and ordering food is manageable. The genuine friction is the real-name booking for the cruise, whose official platform is largely in Chinese, and the transfer from the city to the piers. Book a day ahead, or take a hotel transfer, and both disappear.
Where PT5 Fits In
The difficulty in Guilin is not the sights but the joins: a cruise ticket to grab ahead, piers outside town, and a plan that must still connect to Yangshuo. Someone on the ground is the most practical help.
Someone meets you on arrival
Pickup at Liangjiang Airport or Guilin North, straight to your hotel door, then an early transfer to Mopanshan or Zhujiang pier the next morning.
Someone on call all trip
Help with the real-name booking, the connection from the pier into Yangshuo, a companion on the cycling day, and a quick reply when something goes wrong.
Data and payments ready first
Connectivity and payment set up before you land, so the morning you leave for the pier is not spent on a payment that will not go through.
Two boundaries, stated plainly
We do not promise safety. We translate, advance small amounts and accompany you to a police station, hospital or embassy. We do not make police, medical or legal judgments.
Every job is quoted in writing before we start, so the number you agree is the number you pay, and our agents do not accept tips.
If you want the boat, the raft and the transfers settled together, start in the trip group.
The Short Version
Guilin is not a city you see more of. Decide the boat or the raft first – the boat if you have luggage and older relatives, the raft if you want to be near the water – then give day one to the city, day three to cycling in Yangshuo, and the whole of day two to the river.
Onward from Guilin
- Direct high-speed trains run from Guilin North to Shanghai Hongqiao; the fastest cover it in about seven and a half hours, with most direct trains taking eight to nine and a half.[12]
- Second class commonly runs from about ¥320 to ¥760 (about US$48–113). If direct trains are full, change once at Changsha South, or fly from Liangjiang Airport. Check 12306 for fares.
- Ticketing, seat choice and transfer buffers are covered in our high-speed rail post.
