Zhangjiajie 2026: Which Gate, Which Slot, 4 Days

Summary
The question in Zhangjiajie is not what to see but which gate to enter and which peak to climb first. The Wulingyuan core area has three main ticket gates, and the wrong one adds at least half an hour of walking; Tianmen Mountain and the canyon sit on a different route, so do not force them into one day. This guide covers the real-name booking rules, how to order four days, which cable car or elevator to take, and the hours worth avoiding.
Quick facts first
The gate decision comes first
Zhangjiajie goes wrong for one reason: treating it as a single park to tick off. Three things decide whether these four days work. Which time slot your ticket is for, and which gate you enter. And whether you climb by elevator or on foot.
| Item | Number |
|---|---|
| Days needed | Four days: one for Tianmen Mountain, two for the forest park, one for the canyon or Fenghuang |
| Book before you fly | Timed, gate-specific real-name tickets for Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain and the canyon, through the official Zhangjiajie One-Tap Tour mini-program |
| Wulingyuan ticket | ¥165 (about US$25) per person for the main gate, valid four days; the shuttle bus is extra |
| Release and lead time | Tickets release seven days ahead, at 08:00 each morning; book five to seven days out in peak season |
| Daily cap | Each park caps daily entries, and closes when full |
| Getting around inside | Bailong Elevator ¥65 (about US$9.7) one way, Tianzi Mountain cable car ¥72 (about US$11) one way |

Why Zhangjiajie, and who should skip it
Zhangjiajie is not one park but several mountains. The Wulingyuan core area, also known as Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, lies north of the city and holds Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream, Ten-Mile Gallery and Huangshizhai. Tianmen Mountain sits just beside the town, and the canyon and its glass bridge are on another road again. The commonest first-time mistake is to treat them as stops on a single ticket and try to finish them in one day.
Come if you can give the mountains two days or more, and accept early starts and timed bookings. Reorder the trip if you have only a single day, or if you mean to compress Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain, the canyon and Fenghuang into one run. You can rush Zhangjiajie, but most of it will be spent queuing and changing transport.
No-repeat rule: payments and connectivity, general scams, high-speed rail ticketing, seasons and crowds, cuisines and prices are referenced, not rewritten. The linked posts carry the full versions.

2
What you must book before you fly
Almost every ticket in Zhangjiajie has to be booked ahead, and what you book is not a date but an entry slot and a gate. Recheck the price figures in the week you travel.
The official channel is the only channel
- There is one official booking channel: the WeChat mini-program Zhangjiajie One-Tap Tour. Third-party platforms can sell you a ticket, but the timed, gate-specific reservation is still confirmed inside that mini-program.
- Release: quota is freed by the day, generally seven days ahead, with day seven opening at 08:00 each morning. In peak season book five to seven days out; off season, three days is usually enough.
- Everyone books under their real name, one person, one document, one ticket, and entry scans your original document plus your face. Scalped tickets and anyone else’s ticket will not pass the gate.
Three sites, three separate bookings
- Wulingyuan core area: the main ticket is a flat ¥165 (about US$25) per person year round and stays valid four days; the shuttle bus is separate, and the combined ticket-and-bus rate follows the official weekly notice.
- Tianmen Mountain: the combo ticket includes the round-trip cable car, and the rate follows the operator’s weekly notice. The upper cable car has been under maintenance since November 2025, so routes A and B are adjusted; check the official account before you go.
- The canyon and glass bridge: three routes. Route A is a canyon hike, Route B adds the glass bridge, the canyon walk and a boat, and Route C is the glass bridge alone; all three rates follow the official notice. Book a timed slot one to three days ahead.
Who enters free, who pays half
- At Wulingyuan, visitors under 14, over 65, serving soldiers and visitors with disabilities enter free on a valid document, but still buy the shuttle bus ticket. Visitors aged 60 to 64 and full-time students pay half. Discounted tickets also need an online booking, and you must carry the original document.
The daily cap is a hard limit: each park sets its own daily cap and closes when full, with no top-up channel.
The short list
The short list: what is actually worth your time
- Golden Whip Stream on foot. Day 2, from the South Gate as it opens
- The Qiankun Pillar and the First Bridge Under Heaven. Day 2, first stop on the top
- The Bailong Elevator. Day 2, the quickest way up
- The panorama from Tianzi Mountain. Day 3 morning
- The Ten-Mile Gallery. Day 3, before you leave
- The glass walkway and Tianmen Cave. Day 1, with the cable car base in town
- Huangshizhai. A spare half day, by cable car or on foot
- The canyon glass bridge. Day 4, or Fenghuang instead
- Fenghuang old town and the Tuo River at night. Day 4 as a day trip, or stay a night
- Furong Town. Half a day, 23 to 30 minutes by train
- Xibu Street in the evening, in Wulingyuan town
Shopping and the evening
- Shopping: Xibu Street in Wulingyuan town for Tujia weaving, cured meats and mountain goods; the city’s supermarkets and specialty shops are more honest on price
- Evenings: Xibu Street and the city’s pedestrian street are where a climbing day winds down
- Meal timing: restaurants inside the park are the dearest and the dullest, so eat after you leave; Ziwu Road and Dayong Fucheng in the city have the widest choice
3
Ordering the four days
Four days is the minimum for Zhangjiajie: two mountains plus one more piece. With only three days, choose between the canyon and Fenghuang.
- Day 1 · Arrival and Tianmen Mountain. Drop your bags in town first; the lower Tianmen cable car station is right in the city, and the ride up, the glass walkway and Tianmen Cave take half a day to a full day. Arriving late, move Tianmen to the next morning.
- Day 2 · Forest park: Golden Whip Stream and Yuanjiajie. Enter early and walk Golden Whip Stream first, a gentle seven kilometers, then climb to Yuanjiajie for the Qiankun Pillar and the First Bridge Under Heaven; go up by the Bailong Elevator or on foot.
- Day 3 · Tianzi Mountain and Ten-Mile Gallery. Take in the panorama from Tianzi Mountain, descend by cable car, and walk the Ten-Mile Gallery before leaving, with the little train at ¥38 (about US$5.7) one way.
- Day 4 · The glass bridge or Fenghuang. For a thrill, head to the glass bridge; for a change of scene, take the train to Fenghuang, about one hour, as a day trip or an overnight.
Near mountains first, far mountains second, and the last day for the glass bridge or the old town; putting Tianmen Mountain on the first full day leaves the most room for delays.

Read this first:Before you lock the four days, read section 6: which gate to use and whether to climb by elevator or on foot decide the tickets you book.
4
Which district to stay in
Zhangjiajie splits into three places to stay, and your choice largely decides which gate you enter each day.
- Wulingyuan town, around the Sign Gate or East Gate: closest to the East Gate, with the fullest choice of food, lodging and shops and Xibu Street nearby, good for two straight days in the forest park. The catch is the longest East Gate queue in peak season.
- The city center in Yongding district, near the Tianmen cable car station: the rail station, the airport and the Tianmen cable car base all sit on this side, handy for arrival, for a Tianmen day and for departure; reaching Wulingyuan takes a 40 to 50 minute shuttle.
- Near the South Gate at the forest park: quieter, with the calmest early-morning entry, though fewer services than the East Gate. Good for a self-drive trip or anyone avoiding crowds.
If both days go to Wulingyuan, stay in Wulingyuan town; if you want Tianmen Mountain, the train and the airport to be easy, stay in the city.
5
Getting around: rail, airport and park transport
Getting to Zhangjiajie keeps improving, but the stretch from station to park still needs thinking through in advance.
High-speed rail: Zhangjiajie West
- Shuttles bound for Wulingyuan leave from outside the exit; an ordinary bus is about ¥13 (about US$1.9) and the official express about ¥15 (about US$2.2), with a journey of roughly 40 to 50 minutes.
- To Changsha is about 2.5 to 3.5 hours by train, to Fenghuang about one hour and to Furong Town about 23 to 30 minutes; confirm services and fares on 12306 for the day.
Flights: Hehua International Airport
- The airport is about 5 to 6 kilometers from the center, a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride; the airport bus is about ¥10 (about US$1.5) and a city bus about ¥2 (about US$0.3). There is no direct bus to Wulingyuan, and a taxi takes about 40 minutes.
- Routes cover Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Xi’an among others, with international services to South Korea and Southeast Asia; schedules change after each seasonal switch.
Inside the park: shuttle bus and cable cars
- The park is large and the shuttle buses link the sights; the main ticket does not include them, so buy the combined park-and-bus ticket or a separate one at the station.
- Rides are charged separately: Bailong Elevator ¥65 (about US$9.7) one way, Tianzi Mountain cable car ¥72 (about US$11), Yangjiajie cable car ¥76 (about US$11), Huangshizhai cable car ¥65 (about US$9.7), and the Ten-Mile Gallery train ¥38 (about US$5.7).

6
Which gate to enter, and which lift to take
Wulingyuan now has five ticket gates: the East Gate at Wujiaoyu or the Sign Gate, the South Gate at the forest park, the West Gate at Yangjiajie, the North Gate at Tianzi Mountain and the Middle Gate at Zimugang. For most visitors the real choice is East, South or West; pick wrong and you may add half an hour or more of walking to a single day.
- East Gate (Sign Gate): closest to town, best served, convenient for the Bailong Elevator, and the longest queue in peak season.
- South Gate (forest park): the Golden Whip Stream trailhead is right inside, best for walkers, less crowded, with the finest early-morning experience.
- West Gate (Yangjiajie): best for heading straight to Yangjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, though it takes a drive from the city.
Which cable car or elevator to take depends first on whether you are going up or coming down.
- Bailong Elevator: a ride of just over a minute straight up to Yuanjiajie, the first choice for saving your legs; at midday in peak season the queue can reach two hours, so go early or walk.
- Tianzi Mountain cable car: good as one end of a ride-up-for-the-panorama, ride-down-to-town day, and paired with the Bailong Elevator it links Yuanjiajie and Tianzi in one day.
- Huangshizhai cable car and the Ten-Mile Gallery train: optional. Anyone with the energy can walk both, and spend the money on a stretch that is worth more.
Going up by the Bailong Elevator and down by the Tianzi cable car saves the most time; to dodge the elevator queue, enter by the South Gate and walk Golden Whip Stream up to Yuanjiajie.

7
What to eat, and where
Zhangjiajie eats the western Hunan way, sour, hot and heavy on cured meat, and food in the mountains is judged by how well it carries rice.
- Sanxiaguo: the best-known dish, several meats and offal stewed in one pot and eaten with rice; found all over the city and Wulingyuan town.
- Tujia cured meats: smoked pork, sausage and liver, cooked with mountain bamboo shoots and dried vegetables.
- Rock fungus chicken and stone-ear soup: mountain ingredients in a light broth, good after a day of climbing.
- Snacks: pickled radish, blood tofu, mugwort cakes and shefan rice, all easy to find at roadside shops.
The city center around Ziwu Road and Dayong Fucheng has the widest choice and the most honest prices; Xibu Street in Wulingyuan town is good for grazing but pricey; restaurants inside the park are the dearest and the dullest, so eat after you leave. Check the posted prices before you order.

8
Two hours off the crowds
Crowds follow a pattern: two peaks, one between 09:00 and 11:00 and one at lunch, sharper on holidays.
- Golden Whip Stream at dawn. Enter as the South Gate opens, between 06:30 and 07:00 in peak season, when it is quiet, the mist is still in, and the monkeys are lively.
- Yuanjiajie, early or late. The viewing platforms are quiet before 10:00 and empty again after 16:00; the middle belongs to the coach groups.
- Xibu Street in the evening. Save the daylight for walking and wander Wulingyuan town after dark.
- Change your gate. The East Gate queues longest in peak season; South and West are lighter.
Mountain weather turns fast, and mist can clear inside an hour, so do not rewrite your plan just because the morning is foggy.

9
Rules that catch visitors out
- Use the official channel only. That is the WeChat mini-program Zhangjiajie One-Tap Tour; scalped tickets and cut-price packages will not pass the face-scan gate.
- Four-day validity is not open entry. The ticket lasts four days, but every entry needs a fresh time slot and gate, and once the day is full you cannot get in.
- Carry the original document. Entry scans the original you booked with plus your face; a phone photo is only a backup.
- Arrive in your booked slot. Entry is timed, and a late arrival can be voided, so come early rather than cut it fine.
- Check cable car maintenance before you go. The upper Tianmen cable car has been under repair since November 2025, adjusting routes A and B, and the Bailong Elevator or Tianzi cable car can close at short notice.

FAQ
Do I have to take the Bailong Elevator?
No, but it is the most direct way to save time and legs. At midday in peak season the queue can reach two hours, so going early or walking up both avoid it.
Is the glass bridge worth a separate trip?
It depends what you want. The bridge sits on its own route, a further drive from Wulingyuan. For the bridge alone, buy Route C; to add the canyon, Route B is better value.
Does the ticket include the shuttle bus?
The main Wulingyuan ticket does not; buy the combined ticket or a separate bus fare. Tianmen Mountain and glass bridge combo tickets usually include the cable car or shuttle, but check the ticket itself.
What if the Tianmen cable car is under maintenance?
With the upper cable car under maintenance since November 2025, routes A and B are adjusted; the usual substitutes are the through-the-mountain escalator or the park shuttle, and the operator’s notice is final. Check it the night before rather than planning from last year’s route.
Is Zhangjiajie workable with older parents or children?
Yes, if you plan around the queues: at midday in peak season the Bailong Elevator can take two hours. Split the forest park over two days, walk one stretch a day and lean on the cable cars and shuttles; a stroller is hard going, because steps and hill paths are the norm.

The short version
The short version
In Zhangjiajie the hard part is never the mountains but the schedule: book the right time slot, choose the right gate, and decide before you go whether you climb by elevator or on foot. Settle those four things early and the rest, the peaks and the mist, unfolds on its own.
Around the region
Around the region: Fenghuang, Changsha and Furong Town
Zhangjiajie sits in western Hunan, and every direction leads to another town or small city worth a stop.
- Fenghuang (Xiangxi prefecture): about one hour by train from Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang station, with frequent services. The old town has no main-gate ticket and can be wandered all day; the Tuo River boat and the nine-sight combo are charged separately.
- Changsha: about 2.5 to 3.5 hours by train, the most common gateway in and out of Hunan; you can also fly.
- Furong Town (Yongshun): about 23 to 30 minutes by train from Zhangjiajie West, an easy half day or full day.
- Toward Chongqing and Guiyang: connect via Huaihua and Tongren, with services and times confirmed on 12306 for the day.
- Hehua International Airport: routes cover Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Xi’an among others, about 5 to 6 kilometers from the city center.
The logic is simple: south to Fenghuang and Huaihua, northeast back to Changsha, west toward Chongqing and Guiyang. Placed at the midpoint of this stretch of western Hunan, it is easy to reach from either side.
