Chongqing 2026: Monorail, Cableway, 3 Days

Summary
In Chongqing, distance is measured by vertical drop, not by kilometers. Two points that touch on a map may be one flight of steps or one cableway ride apart, and the busy hours overlap. This guide covers how the levels connect, the hours that spare you a queue, where to sleep with fewer stairs, and three days that will not wreck your legs.
Quick facts first
The trip is decided before the sights
What decides a Chongqing trip is not the sightseeing list but two things: whether you spread your river crossings and your climbs across one day or two, and whether you took a cableway number in advance. Split the two and book the cableway first.
| Item | Number |

| Hongya Cave lights | The facade lights up between 19:30 and 20:00 after sunset and goes dark at 23:00 |
| To Chengdu | About 1 hour at best on the Chengdu-Chongqing high-speed line |
| To Wulong | About 39 minutes at best from Chongqing East to Wulong South |
| Monorail Line 2 frequency | Trains pass Liziba every 3 to 8 minutes; two or three will get you the shot |

Why Chongqing, and who should skip it
Chongqing sells on vertical distance. Hills, rivers and towers stack up, so two points two centimeters apart on a map can be dozens of meters apart underfoot: one at a riverside basement, the other outside a twentieth-floor road. You take it level by level, not by checklist.
Come if you will climb slopes, want one ride on the Yangtze cableway and Monorail Line 2, can take numbing heat, and want the two rivers after dark. Skip it if you have limited mobility, push a stroller, hate queues, or dislike humidity.

No-repeat rule: payments, connectivity and eSIM, hotel types, scams and safety, high-speed rail, seasons and crowds, and dish-by-dish pricing are referenced, not rewritten. The linked posts carry the full versions.
2
What you must book before you fly
Most of Chongqing needs no reservation. The advance work is concentrated in the three places that are busiest after dark: the Yangtze cableway, Hongya Cave and Ciqikou. Prices and timetables get a final check in the week of publication.
Yangtze River Cableway
- Fare: ¥30 (about US$4.5) one way, ¥50 (about US$7.5) return. Waits on the spot are long at peak; buy and take a number in advance on the cableway’s WeChat account, then go when your number comes up.
- Hours: high season 07:30 to 22:30 (1 March to 31 October); low season 07:30 to 21:30 (1 November to the end of February); on national public holidays it always closes at 22:30. Confirm with the official site, www.cqsuodao.com, or the WeChat account in the week you go.
- Location: the north station is at 151 Xinhua Road, Yuzhong district, about 20 meters from Exit 5B of Xiaoshizi station on metro lines 1 and 6; the south station opens onto Longmenhao Old Street.
Hongya Cave
- Free to enter, with a few experiences inside charging separately. Open roughly 11:00 to 23:00.
- The facade lighting comes on after sunset, usually between 19:30 and 20:00, and goes off at 23:00; it shifts with the season, so check the official WeChat account in the week you go.
- When numbers run high it can cap entry and ask visitors to book free of charge on the official WeChat account and walk one way only; on a holiday, read the notice before setting out.
Ciqikou Ancient Town
- Free, with the main street open all day; a few small sights such as Baolun Temple charge separately. Ciqikou station on metro line 1 is a few minutes on foot.
- The official listing gives booking via the Chongqing Ciqikou WeChat account; on holidays it is worth booking before you go.
Dazu Rock Carvings
- Baodingshan ¥115 (about US$17) and Beishan ¥70 (about US$10.5) in high season, or ¥140 (about US$21) for a combined ticket, all lower in low season; open 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 16:30.
- Buy online and enter by scanning your original ID; from the rail station, take the shuttle or a taxi.
On rebooking agents and skip-the-line offers: official reservations always run through official channels. There is no paid queue-jumping lane, and no reason to hand your passport details to an unknown platform; the extra money usually buys peace of mind and nothing else.

The short list
The short list: what is actually worth your time
- Liziba, the monorail through the block. Day 1 before 09:00, the platform below is free
- Hongya Cave at night. Day 1, from the Qiansimen Bridge side as the lights come on
- The Yangtze cableway. Day 2 midday, number taken first
- The Mountain City Trail, Third Trail. Day 2 morning, flagstones and river views
- Shibati. Day 2, downhill to the river
- Longmenhao Old Street. Day 2 afternoon, beside the cableway’s south station
- Nanshan for the two-river night view. Day 2, early evening
- Eling Erchang. Any spare half day, an old factory turned creative park
- Ciqikou. Day 3, quietest before 07:00
- The Dazu carvings. The Day 3 alternative, an early train out
- A day of their own: Wulong’s Three Natural Bridges and a Three Gorges cruise
Shopping and the evening
- Shopping: the department stores cluster at Jiefangbei and Guanyinqiao; Ciqikou is good for browsing, though the main street runs expensive
- Evenings: the two-river cruise and the Nanbin Road light line; Hongya Cave goes dark at 23:00
- For a table: Guanyinqiao eats better and cheaper than Jiefangbei

The three days that work
These three days follow one rule: split the river crossings from the climbs, and climb in one direction a day. The tiredness here comes less from distance than from going up, down and back across the river.
Day 1 · The Yuzhong peninsula, level by level
09:00 at Liziba for the monorail through the building (trains every 3 to 8 minutes), lunch and a wander at Guanyinqiao or Eling Erchang, late afternoon on the Qiansimen Bridge side for Hongya Cave lighting up, hotpot for dinner. One slope all day.
Day 2 · The crossing and the old streets
In the morning follow the Mountain City Trail or Shibati down to the river, at midday cross at the cableway’s north station (number taken in advance), take Longmenhao Old Street slowly, and climb Nanshan for the night view. One crossing, both banks.
Day 3 · Ciqikou or the Dazu carvings
Easy version: reach Ciqikou before 07:00, walk the main street and Baolun Temple while it is quiet, return by lunch. Deeper version: an early train to the Dazu Rock Carvings for Baodingshan and Beishan, back by evening. Pick one.
Two places that need their own day
Wulong (the Three Natural Bridges and Xiannü Mountain) and the Three Gorges cruise each need a full day or an overnight. Force either into three days and you usually drop Ciqikou or Dazu.
Read this first:Before you fix the three days, read section 6 for how Chongqing’s three levels connect: it decides which level your first day starts on.
4
Where to stay
One rule for lodging: stay close to a metro station, and check whether the hotel sits on flat ground or a slope at the exit. Map distances mislead; one hidden flight of steps turns a five-minute walk into fifteen. Room types and how to judge a hotel are in the hotels post.
Jiefangbei / Hongya Cave (Yuzhong)
First choice for a first visit and for the night-view center. Metro lines 1, 2 and 6 meet here, and Hongya Cave and the cableway are walkable. The price is crowds and slopes.
Guanyinqiao (Jiangbei)
Dense with malls and restaurants, easy transfers on metro lines 3 and 6, and relatively flat, which suits anyone who wants a lively base without a constant climb.
Nanbin Road / Nanping (Nan’an)
The Yuzhong skyline greets you across the water by day, the far shore lights up at night, and the cableway and Longmenhao Old Street are on this side. Quiet, good river views, one crossing to downtown.
Shapingba / toward Ciqikou
For an early Ciqikou start or a next-day train to Dazu or Wulong, this is where metro line 1 and the Shapingba high-speed rail station both sit.
Toward Chongqing North
For an early train or a next-day run to Chengdu or Guiyang; Jiefangbei is 20 to 30 minutes by car, and check whether your ticket says the north or the south square.
5
Getting around: metro, intercity, airport
Chongqing’s rail network is cheap and dense and covers almost any city itinerary; the only thinking required is which levels you change across. Taxis matter in three cases: heavy luggage, an early train, and a late return from a night market.
Fares
- Fares run by distance: ¥2 (about US$0.3) for 0 to 4 km, then step by step, ¥3 for 4 to 8 km, ¥4 for 8 to 12 km, ¥5 for 12 to 17 km, ¥6 for 17 to 23 km, ¥7 for 23 to 30 km, ¥8 for 30 to 40 km, ¥9 for 40 to 55 km, and ¥10 (about US$1.5) for 55 to 75 km; a single journey rarely tops ¥10.
- Scan Alipay or WeChat, or tap a transit card, to enter; single tickets come from the vending machines.
- Most lines run 06:30 to 23:00, with a later last train at a few stations; on holidays busy lines extend their hours, so check the operator’s timetable for the week.
Monorail Line 2 and the airport line
- Monorail Line 2 runs along the Jialing River, and Liziba station sits inside a residential-commercial block where trains pass through floors 6 and 7. Toward Jiaochangkou is downtown, toward Yudong is across the river; do not ride the wrong way.
- Reach Jiangbei International Airport on metro line 10, which serves Terminals 2 and 3 and links the north and south squares of Chongqing North; line 10 also runs express services, with times set by the operator’s timetable.
Save taxis for an early Ciqikou start, a luggage-heavy station change, and a late return from the riverbank. In Chongqing, navigate to a target by its floor, not by flat distance.

6
Chongqing has three levels: monorail, cableway and hillside stairs
The easiest way to read Chongqing is as three layers: the river and riverside roads first, the elevated monorail and light rail second, the cableway across the river third. Every route is a transfer between them.
Second level: the monorail through the building
Liziba station was China’s first straddle-type monorail elevated station built into a residential-commercial block, on floors 6 and 7. The viewing platform below covers about 1,367 square meters, is free and unticketed, and sits just down the stairs and across the road. Trains pass every 3 to 8 minutes; two or three will do.
Third level: the river-crossing cableway
The Yangtze cableway opened in 1987 as the first large passenger cableway across the great river, and it is both a 4A-rated attraction and a crossing locals still use: several kilometers of river in a few minutes, a hillside city by day, lights at dusk.
First level: the Mountain City Trail
The Mountain City Trail (the Third Trail and the Shibati area) is the layer beyond the rails: stone steps, old walls, cable cars and aging apartment blocks in one line, best walked slowly to see how the city grew along the hills.
How to string them together
The smoothest order is high to low: Liziba for the monorail through the building, then the rail along the river, then the cableway across, down into Longmenhao Old Street, and up to Nanshan. It is downhill almost the whole way.

7
What to eat, and in which district
This section covers one thing: which meal belongs to which district. Cuisines and price ranges are in the food post and are not repeated here.
- Hotpot, in the residential blocks around Jiefangbei and Jiaochangkou. Your first hotpot is best on the night you arrive. Chongqing’s mild level is usually hot enough for a first-timer, and a split pot is the safe order; the busiest places peak from 18:00 to 20:00, so arrive before 17:00 or after 20:30.
- Chongqing noodles, at the mouth of an old lane. For breakfast, pick the noodle shop with the most people; pea-and-pork and beef noodles are the frequent orders, and tables turn fast.
- Jianghu dishes and chicken offal, on the south bank. A sour-and-hot chicken offal pot with pickled radish, best ordered for a group.
- Snack in the sights, dine in the neighborhoods. Food at the Hongya Cave and Ciqikou attractions costs more and comes smaller; for a real meal, walk one or two streets off the main drag.

8
Two hours off the tourist track
Chongqing’s popular spots are two different worlds at dawn and at night. Most of the places below are free, and stepping into them puts you in an ordinary local day.
- Mountain City Trail (Third Trail area), 08:00 to 10:00. Flagstones, old walls and river views in one line, and almost nobody around.
- Longmenhao Old Street, early morning or dusk. Beside the cableway’s south station, old Western-style buildings and a riverside path that go quiet and feel calmer than the main streets.
- Eling Erchang creative park, morning. A converted old factory district with views over both rivers from the slope, and fewer visitors than Hongya Cave.
- Huangjueping graffiti street, afternoon. Around the old Sichuan Fine Arts campus, with murals the length of the street and no crush.

9
Rules that catch visitors out
- Wear shoes that handle slopes. You will climb more stairs and levels than you expect; slippery soles turn the day into a trial, and steps are worst after rain.
- Check the floor, not the flat distance. Two points 200 meters apart on a map may sit three floors and one skyway apart.
- Take a cableway number before you go: buy one on the cableway’s WeChat account, then ride when your number comes up.
- Dodge the holiday peak at Hongya Cave and Ciqikou. Both can cap entry and ask for bookings and one-way walking; aim for a weekday, an early morning, or either side of the lights coming on.
- Take a hotpot number early. The busiest places peak from 18:00 to 20:00; take a number on the mini-program, or eat in the afternoon or later.

FAQ
Can I do Chongqing on my own without Chinese?
Yes. Rail station names and lines are signed in Chinese and English, and the official mini-programs work. The hard parts are aiming at a target by floor and telling a taxi driver where to go: screenshot the Chinese address and show the driver the Chinese name.
What is the best season to come?
Spring and autumn are the kindest, mild with fewer rainy days. Summer is hot and humid, so keep the outdoors for morning and night; winter is foggy, damp and cold. Rain gear and non-slip shoes are never wasted.
When can I eat hotpot without a queue?
The 18:00 to 20:00 dinner rush is the peak. To wait less, arrive before 17:00 or go after 20:30; on weekends and holidays push that another half hour.
Is Chongqing workable with elderly parents or a stroller?
Expect steps, slopes and footbridges, and lifts that are not always where you need them. The workable version is to keep to Yuzhong and Nanbin Road, move point to point by metro and taxi, and swap climbs for viewpoints and riverside paths: Liziba’s platform, Longmenhao and Nanbin Road are all gentle.
How much stair climbing is a normal day?
Once the crossings and the climbs are kept apart, a day is roughly two or three continuous ascents with the rest flat or downhill. Wear flat, non-slip shoes, since the steps are worst after rain, and navigate by floor rather than flat distance.
Where PT5 fits in
Where PT5 fits into a Chongqing trip
Chongqing’s difficulty is not the sights but the drop between levels: one errand can mean three floors down and two slopes up, the cableway and ferry have to line up, and hotpot needs a number at peak. Someone on the ground is the most practical help.
Someone meets you on arrival
Airport or Chongqing North pickup, straight to your hotel door, so you do not work out rail transfers and ramps the moment you land.
Someone on call all trip
Cableway numbers and connections, the off-peak hours at Liziba and Hongya Cave, hotpot bookings, and a car and companion for a Dazu or Wulong day, with a fast reply when something slips.
Data and payments ready first
Connectivity and payment set up before you land, so day one is not spent on a lunch you cannot pay for.
Two boundaries, stated plainly

The short version
The short version
A smooth Chongqing trip is not about how many spots you tick off but whether you split the crossings from the climbs: one direction of slope a day, a cableway number taken early, and hotpot away from the 18:00 to 20:00 peak. The city unfolds from there.
Around the region
Around the region: Chengdu, Wulong and Dazu
Chongqing is the hub of the southwest, with dense high-speed rail and flights to the east, west and south. Treat it as a starting point rather than an end point, and the itinerary gets easier. Routes out of town are below; city transport is in section 5.
- Chengdu: nearly 200 high-speed trains a day, about 1 hour at best; on weekdays seats are easy. Most leave from Chongqing North or West and arrive at Chengdu East or South, so check the station on your ticket.
- Wulong: since the Chongqing East to Qianjiang section opened in June 2025, Chongqing East to Wulong South takes about 39 minutes at best; the older line from Chongqing North runs 1.5 to 2 hours, with more departures. From the station, take the scenic-area bus to Xiannü Mountain and the Three Natural Bridges.
- Dazu Rock Carvings: about 30 minutes by high-speed rail from Chongqing West to Dazu South, then 30 to 40 minutes by taxi to Baodingshan; buses also run into Dazu town.
- Three Gorges cruise: board at Chaotianmen Wharf and head east through the Qutang, Wu and Xiling gorges to Yichang, usually over 3 to 4 nights. Schedules and fares follow the cruise line’s weekly notice.
- Guiyang: about 2 hours from Chongqing West to Guiyang North, with frequent departures; the planned Chongqing-Guiyang line targets roughly 1 hour once built.
- Jiangbei International Airport: metro line 10 runs straight into the city (Terminals 2 and 3 and Chongqing North); the domestic routes here cover the main cities, making it Chongqing’s most used air gateway.
